ASHRAE Goldcoast October Notice Joint Meeting with Gulfstream and AIA Palm Beach
Please join us Thursday, October 11th for our 2nd meeting of the year! We will be hosting a Distinguished Lecturer through ASHRAE Region 12. This will also be a joint meeting with ASHRAE Gulfstream and AIA West Palm Beach. Please not that the date is NOT our usual 2nd Wednesday of the month, and that the schedule of events is a little bit different as well to accommodate two topics. We're starting early, so be sure to get there early! "Climate Change - An Even More Inconvenient Truth" & "How have Climate and Ozone affected technology?" Leading questions - Why are sea levels rising? They are, but not because of what most believe. Are the polar caps melting? The answer might surprise you. If Greenland ice cap melts, what is the most significant impact? Sea level rise? The real answer might be a surprise Does climate change mean the whole world gets warmer? The answer might surprise you. Presentation will be held at 6468 East Rogers Circle, Boca Raton, FL 33487 Cost will be $35/ person. Philadelphia, PA Tom Werkema graduated from the University of Michigan in 1971 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and in 1975 from Seidman Graduate School, a division of Grand Valley State University, with an MBA. Mr. Werkema has worked in the chemical industry for a variety of companies, building chemical plants, running them as plant manager, and in 1987, became Business Manager for the Industrial Chemical Division of Pennwalt, a $200 million business. In 1993, he became Vice President of Government Activities for Paris based ATOFINA, the successor to Pennwalt, which was was spun off in 2006 and renamed Arkema. For the past 15 years, Mr. Werkema has been involved in and attended United Nations meetings of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change. Mr. Werkema is an internationally known expert on Climate Change and Ozone Depletion science and politics. Mr. Werkema is a Presidential Government Activities appointee for ASHRAE's Chapter Technology Transfer Committee, 2001-2004, 2006-2008 and is a Presidential appointee to its Advocacy Committee and a member of the Climate Change Committee (TC 2.5). He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy, a leading fluorocarbon advocacy group, the Board of Directors for the International Climate Change Partnership, the Chlorine Chemistry Division Operating Committee (American Chemistry Council), various committees for the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, including Chair of the Responsible Use Guide work group, API Rigid Foams Committee and leadership roles in several other trade associations. Mr. Werkema has been a Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE since 2000, specializing in ozone, climate change, advocacy and other international issues. I would like to thank all of you who attended last month’s chapter meeting. I was happy to see such a good turn out despite the short notice and I hope to see all of you at our joint meeting this month. As you know, ASHRAE is a grassroots society. The success of our chapter, and that of society, depends on the involvement of our members. I would like to extend a special thanks to our Officers, Chairs, and Board of Governors for their continued efforts and dedication.
