An accurate, and thorough test and balance report is essential to all building owners, managers, consulting engineers, architects, and most contractors who work on a given project. We all realize the importance of an HVAC system whose air and water sides have been adjusted properly and well documented. All too often this crucial last phase of construction is not performed properly, leaving us with a building and HVAC system which does not provide a comfortable environment, nor operates efficiently. In addition all parties involved start blaming each other for the failure.

We have all been on projects like this, and have hear “It’s the controls fault!” , “It was a bad design!” or “It must be something the sheetmetal company did”, when in fact the system was not properly balanced. Many of you have already shared your stories with me about your T & B nightmares. For instance the project which had two air handlers deleted from the original job, yet the final test and balance report showed that they not only existed but were balanced. This is an example of a falsified T&B report which is ridiculously easy to identify.

Mr. Jenison will demonstrate to us how to spot some of the not so obvious falsifications. In addition Eric will speak on the entire basics of a good test and balance procedure.

Eric Jenison is President of Total Dynamic Balance, Inc. Total Dynamic balance provides independent Test and Balance services and is certified by the National Environmental Balancing Bureau. Mr. Jenison is skilled in the areas of hydronic and air balancing, HVAC System Commissioning, and Sound / Vibration Measurement.

Many of our members know Eric well as he has been a long time member of the Gold Coast Chapter and served as President of our Chapter from 1995 to 1997. Actually Eric was the only Gold Coast Chapter President to serve two consecutive terms. In addition to his ASHRAE activities, Eric currently serves as the treasurer of NEBB. For the past several years Mr. Jenison has coordinated a NEBB fundraiser during their annual meeting, which donates $10,000 per year to the ASHRAE Resource Promotion.

A Message From Our President

Joe FellmethCongratulations to the Gold Coast Chapter! September’s meeting was one of the best in recent memory, and the reason was our members and guests. Forty-seven (47) people attended last month’s meeting, which was more than double last year’s first meeting. You could feel a little more energy in the room with the greater attendance, and from what I heard from those who were there, they found the information in our speaker’s presentation valuable.

The topic was “How to Avoid Toxic Mold Litigation”. Mr. Michael Greene gave an insightful presentation which focused on the legal aspects of the mold issue and how to protect yourselves as a company and as individuals. As one guest told me as he was leaving “ I must have attended a dozen presentations on mold, and all they every show you are pictures of mold under a microscope. This was the first presentation that really taught me useful information!” Presenting useful information which will help your businesses or you professionally is our goal for the entire year. This month’s presentation should be another good one. Eric Jenison will speak to us on Test and Balance Reports and how to spot falsified data in them. I look forward great meeting.

In addition, our Chapter will be visited this month by our Assistant Regional Chairman, Mr. Rob Risley. For those of you who have not met Rob in the past, this would be a great opportunity to do so. If there is something you would like to share with the Region or Society in general and have not have the chance to express, I am sure Rob would be happy to listen.
Also don’t forget our Annual Golf Tournament in October. All money raised relating to the tournament go to ASHRAE Resource Promotion.

Sincerely,

Joe Fellmeth

Re: Chapter/Regional - ASHRAE Technology Awards

Fellow members:

Our Chapter is asking all Consulting Engineers from Broward or
those that do work in Broward County to participate and submit
projects of their choice for the ASHRAE Technology Awards.
The projects must be completed in the design aspect to
participate in the Chapter and Regional Level. In order to
qualify for the national Award the projects must have been
completed and been in operation for at least a year.

The projects can be in any part of the country if designed
by an Engineer of Broward County. An Engineer outside of
Broward County can participate if the project they are
submitting is in Broward County. The work shall be submitted
before the end of October. A minimum of two projects, depending
on the amount of entries, would then be selected to participate
in the Regional Awards; these projects will be announced at the
November’s Chapter Meeting.

We would also like to see our Consulting Engineers from our
Chapter participate in the Awards selection Committee. If you
wish to participate in this committee please contact our chapter
or myself at the above number.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please contact
me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

John G. Rodriguez
