Variable-primary
flow chilled water systems have received much current attention. It has
been suggested that the primary/secondary chilled water system concept
has outlived its lifespan and that variable-primary flow is the answer
to the problems that have led to its demise. Mr. Peterson will share his
experience with both types of systems.
Engineers have many
decisions to make when designing central chilled water plants today. Many
of these decisions require extensive consideration of elements beyond
the perimeter of the plant. Some of these questions include:
- How can the design
delta T be achieved?
- What effect does
delta T have on chiller performance?
- What plant configuration
best fits the requirements?
- What control strategies
can be used to optimize plant performance?
- How do you select
the proper chillers, cooling towers and pumps?
- What type of building
interface should be used to connect to central systems?
- When is thermal
storage viable?
System designers must
properly address these technical aspects to design efficient chilled water
plants that perform.

From
the Program Chair
The October Meeting
for Gold Coast Chapter proved to be a huge success due to a great program!
We exceeded our attendance projections for this meeting and based on the
responses from the Program Evaluation forms, the presentation was well
received by all.
To recap this
meeting:
A total
of 41 Engineers, Facility Managers, Representatives, and Contractors benefited
from the presentation by Angela Hedgecock, a LEED Accredited Professional,
Vice-President of the Florida Gulf Coast Organizing Group of the USGBC
and ASHRAE member. We certainly appreciate the opportunity to have had
such a professional presentation and will recommend Mrs. Hedgecock to
all other ASHRAE Chapters. Our meeting up in The Tower Club made this
one of our special and memorable meetings. The Miami ASHRAE Chapter was
invited to join us and we enjoyed the company of some of their members.
The Gold Coast Chapter recognized an important volunteer, Mrs. Pat Amiel
Young of TLC Engineers for her efforts in taking reservations and assisting
in making arrangements for the chapter meetings for the last 5 years.
Pat was presented with a gift certificate for the Cheese Cake Factory
as a token of our gratitude. Joe Fellmeth and Richard Ellison made announcements
of their upcoming ASHRAE Resource Promotion Golf Outing and stated that
their goals had been met. Joe and Richard promised a great afternoon on
the golf course followed by an award ceremony including chances for many
desirable prizes.
Our chapter is fortunate
to have many regular attendees plus a several new faces. See the October
attendance list in this newsletter. I look forward to seeing everyone
again next month. We are fortunate to have an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer
present a topic at our November meeting which should be of great interest
to all of us.
Sincerely,
Donald
H. Austin, Jr. P.E.

From
the Vice President
Over
the next few months, we will be putting together an ASHRAE Product Directory
for the Gold Coast Chapter. It will list Manufacturers Representatives
with cross references to specific products. We will also list a current
Membership Directory for our Chapter, along with other useful information.
Anybody with information that would be useful to have in this directory
should contact me at 954-585-4304 or amesser@ccgmail.com. We plan on having
this directory be a free publication to all active members, with additional
copies being available for a nominal cost. We should be able to do this
by having interested members/vendors include advertising within their
particular section of the directory.
I will
bring a copy of such a directory with me for the next meeting. See you
there!

A
word from the Resource Promotion's Chair:
The 13th Annual ASHRAE
Gold Coast Chapter Golf Tournament to support ASHRAE Research was held
on October 15th. The weather was cool and the morning’s rain cleared
in time to provide sunny skies over the beautiful Jacaranda Country Club.
If you were there you probably enjoyed yourself as much as most attendees
and myself. I would first like to thank all those businesses and individuals
who supported the event by either being a hole sponsor or playing golf.
The Golf tournament was successful again this year as it raised $12,787.80
for ASHRAE Research. Special thanks goes out to Rick Ellison of Diversified
Fluid Controls who organized the entire event, purchased hole sponsorships,
entered foursomes in the tournament, and provided the services of two
of his employees during the event. I would like to congratulate the winners
of the tournament as well.
