The solution is to specify state-of-the-art controls that automatically reduce the fan speeds during idle, non-cooking conditions. These controls also improve comfort during the summer, since less hot and humid air is dumped into the kitchen during the middle of the afternoon.

The presentation will cover the technology, market forces promoting this technology, codes, new construction vs. retrofits, and cost/payback analyses.

(The ASHRAE Journal published an article on this topic in its December 2003 issue. Access the article on Melink's website at http://www.melinkcorp.com/news.htm)

Melink Corporate Bio:
Melink Corporation, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, was started in 1987. It is now the largest manufacturer of demand ventilation controls for commercial kitchen hoods in the world and is also the largest testing and balancing firm serving national accounts in the United States. Speaker:
Ted Owen, Vice President & General Manager Melink Corporation
. As Vice President and General Manager, Ted manages the Intelli-Hood side of the business including sales, engineering, manufacturing and customer service. Since his arrival in 1999, Ted has been instrumental in tripling the sales of the Intelli-Hood product and making it the standard that it is today.

Prior to joining Melink, Ted was a Regional Sales Representative for Summit Automation, where he sold electrical controls and components to the residential building industry. While there, Ted doubled the sales volume in his territory in a one-year period. Ted has a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University.

A Message From Our President

Jason Ayala
I would like to thank everyone for the great turnout at our December Social. I think that Shirttail Charlie’s was a great location for the Social and the food was pretty good. I hope all of you enjoyed the get together as much as I did and your holidays were happy and safe.

Now that the festivities are over we begin a brand new year and this means for many of you new resolutions which I know will include attending all of our upcoming meetings. See you all there!!

Also, a reminder that the 2005 Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) will be held in Ft. Lauderdale. For more details contact Dan Rogers/CRC Chapter Chair at dan.rogers@york.com.

From the Vice President

Marie-Pierre BoutinAny Manufacturer Reps that would like to have their companies listed in the upcoming Gold Coast Product Directory need to e-mail me their line card information. Send it to: amesser@centexconstruction.com. We anticipate allowing advertisments in the Directory, for a fee. Be thinking about what you would like to include in our new Product Directory. As a minimum, we need to have the manufacturer's that you represent, what products each of these manufacturers makes, and your company name and contact information. We anticipate using the advertising fees to pay for the publication of the Directory and then provide it free to all of the ASHRAE members and Member organizations for their use as a local reference guide. Happy New Year to all! Let's have a Prosperous 2005!

From the Program Chair,
Donald H. Austin, Jr. P.E.:

It’s the beginning of a new year, my one year anniversary in Southern Florida and one year as a member of the Gold-Coast Chapter.

I certainly like it here and have enjoyed developing all the new relationships over the past year. I am excited to be able to bring to you the presentation titled: "Demand Ventilation for Commercial Kitchen Hoods" which will include the latest technology, market forces promoting this technology, codes, new construction vs. retrofits, and cost/payback analyses for Kitchen Hood Ventilation systems.

Next month, we will be moving the meeting date back one week due to the conflict with ASHRAE Winter Meeting. The Chapter Meeting will be on the third Wednesday, 2/16/04 in lieu of the 9th. Orlando, Florida will be the scene of the 2005 ASHRAE Winter Meeting, February 5-9. The meeting will be held in the Lake Buena Vista area with the headquarters hotel located at the Wyndham Palace Resort. The Winter meeting will offer various ASHRAE’s technical programs, meetings of committees dedicated to producing technical information, educational programs and technical tours. In addition, the AHR EXPO will be held on February 7-9 at the Orange County convention Center with over 1,400 Exhibitors displaying thousands of new and improved HVAC&R products.

At our January Meeting, we will want to discuss and coordinate plans to attend the ASHRAE Winter Meeting and the AHR EXPO. Go to the following link for more information please click here.

Thank you for the past year and have a great year in 2005!

Sincerely,

Don H. Austin, Jr., P.E.

Joe FellmethA word from the Resource Promotion's Chair:

The 13th Annual ASHRAE Gold Coast Chapter Golf Tournament to support ASHRAE Research was held on October 15th. The weather was cool and the morning’s rain cleared in time to provide sunny skies over the beautiful Jacaranda Country Club. If you were there you probably enjoyed yourself as much as most attendees and myself. I would first like to thank all those businesses and individuals who supported the event by either being a hole sponsor or playing golf. The Golf tournament was successful again this year as it raised $12,787.80 for ASHRAE Research. Special thanks goes out to Rick Ellison of Diversified Fluid Controls who organized the entire event, purchased hole sponsorships, entered foursomes in the tournament, and provided the services of two of his employees during the event. I would like to congratulate the winners of the tournament as well.
