A Message From Our President
Richard SeferianHappy New Year. We held our January
meeting at the Marriott with good attendance.
We had several members attend who found
our new venue to be comfortable and enjoyable.
Our speaker was Rick Galvez from Schirmer Engineering, who provided us with his
presentation on "Smoke Control" (code
changes) and his real life experiences.
The audience contributed to Rick's presentation at several times
adding specific do's and don'ts. The discussion was lively,
educational and entertaining. In February, our speaker will share
new approaches for air conditioning in the 21 century.

We want to announce that Susan Julien of Advanced Design
Productions, Inc. will develop our Newsletter. Susan is well known
among the professional marketing community in South Florida
and is an active member of SMPS. Patti Kuschel has retired after
eight years as our chapter Newsletter editor. We have
commissioned Susan to develop our chapter Web site, which
we expect to be on-line this fiscal year. If you wish to advertise
your business card in the Newsletter/Web-site please contact
Jason Ayala
at S&W Sheetmetal. Stay tuned for additional
features and services.

Sincerely,

Richard Seferian

From the broad array of alternatives a screening process was
used to sort the best opportunities for continuing research.
Some of the research is now complete, adding to our knowledge
base; other projects are currently underway. Many of the potential alternatives have been studied in the past, and some are
re-examined as our criteria change (for example, environmental
factors). The merits and pitfalls of Stirling Cycles, thermoelectric
and magnetic refrigeration, Transcritical CO2 cycle as well as
other topics will be discussed.

As always during research a technology will be presented
as something new and great, only to learn that it is a re-invention
of the perpetual motion machine! The presentation will also
explore some of the factors that make some systems attractive
in certain regions of the world and not in others, such as natural
refrigerants and absorption systems.

About Our Speaker:
Our speaker for February, will be Mr. Lee Burgett. Mr. Burgett
is a Fellow grade member of the La Crosse Chapter of ASHRAE.
He has his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State
University. Lee has been working for the Trane Company since 1962.
Presently he is Vice President of New Ventures where he oversees
technical development. He has been on and/or chaired fifty ASHRAE
committees at Society level. In addition Lee is the Chairman of ARIs
SubComittee on 21CR Alternative Systems which studies alternatives
to traditional vapor compression based air conditioning. Mr. Burgett
has been published numerous times in the ASHRAE Journal and
other trade publications. He has received the following Honors and
Awards-Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, R.C Schultze Distinguished
Service Award, ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award, and
ASHRAE Fellow. We are very pleased that Lee is able to visit
us this month and share his vision of the air conditioning
technologies of the future.

Resource & Promotion Update
The ASHRAE Gold Coast Chapters' Resource & Promotion fundraising events are now organized.

  1. First, mark your calendars for the West Palm Beach and Gold Coast Chapters' training seminar on Thursday March 20, 2003 at the Marriott Hotel on Cypress Creek Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale where we hold our monthly meetings.

The seminar will be based on ASHRAE's best selling publication, Humidity Control Design Guide for Commercial Buildings. Application of the related principles will assist the engineer in identifying and avoiding common problems associated with humidity. Registered PE's will earn three (3) PDH hours of continuing education.

  2. Second, the 1st Annual "The War Fishing Tournament" will be held on either May 17 or 24, 2003. Possible locations include the Sands in Pompano Beach and Tug Boat Annie's in Dania Beach. Your input is needed immediately to finalize scheduling and location.

The primary objective of "The War Fishing Tournament" is to have a good time fishing in the context of friendly but lively competition. Competition categories include: A) engineers, B) contractors and C) sales engineers/sales persons.

I look forward to hearing from you as to dates and locations.

Re: Chapter/Regional - ASHRAE Technology Awards

Fellow members:

Our Chapter is asking all Consulting Engineers from Broward or
those that do work in Broward County to participate and submit
projects of their choice for the ASHRAE Technology Awards.
The projects must be completed in the design aspect to
participate in the Chapter and Regional Level. In order to
qualify for the national Award the projects must have been
completed and been in operation for at least a year.

The projects can be in any part of the country if designed
by an Engineer of Broward County. An Engineer outside of
Broward County can participate if the project they are
submitting is in Broward County. The work shall be submitted
before the end of October. A minimum of two projects, depending
on the amount of entries, would then be selected to participate
in the Regional Awards; these projects will be announced at the
November’s Chapter Meeting.

We would also like to see our Consulting Engineers from our
Chapter participate in the Awards selection Committee. If you
wish to participate in this committee please contact our chapter
or myself at the above number.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please contact
me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

John G. Rodriguez
TEGA Chairperson
