A Message From Our President

I would to take this opportunity to thank our generous host Jobing.com for their continued support of our chapter. If you haven’t heard, this year we began a mutually beneficial partnership with Jobing.com and I foresee a lasting future.

It all started last year when Jessica Garvar, a Community Relations Manager with Jobing.com, approached our chapter about their service. (Don’t tell Jessica, but we kinda blew her off at first) However, her persistence truly paid off…for both of us. Eventually we realized what a great resource they could provide for local companies and workers in our industry…not to mention a great meeting room.

I was especially interested in the potential for students and new graduates to have a convenient tool available on the internet that would make it easy to not only find a job, but get an idea about what job was right for them. You see, Jobing.com makes a concerted effort to learn about the different aspects of our industry and present them to interested candidates. I for one would have greatly appreciated such a resource coming out of college.

Here’s where we come in. To provide the most accurate and complete description of our industry to others, we need volunteers to share their wisdom and experiences. If you would be willing to help out, please take a second and contact Jessica at Jessica.Garvar@Jobing.com. You can also check out the ASHRAE Job Board by clicking on the Jobing.com logo at our homepage.

Coming Soon to a Code Near You: A New 90.1
ASHRAE has published a 2007 edition of Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The previous edition was 2004. The new version includes more stringent energy reduction requirements related to lighting, façades, and mechanical systems. The standard also addresses reduction of electrical and cooling loads and thus electricity by allowing less power for lighting. Look for this to be incorporated into state code in the next few years.

Need for LEED?
Are you looking for help in studying for the LEED New Construction exam? There's a technical review workshop presented by the US Green Building Council on February 28: Miramar City Hall 2300 Civic Center Place Miramar, FL 33025 8:30AM - 5:00PM

How Long Will That Last?
Engineers are asked to advise building owners and managers on strategic decisions involving the life cycle and functionally of buildings. In the past, the best data on equipment service life could be found in HANDBOOK APPLICATIONS Chapter 36. Now, a new free online database from ASHRAE provides engineers with equipment service life and annual maintenance costs for a variety of building types and HVAC systems. Your help is needed to populate the database with information from your practice.
