A Message From Our President

Joe FellmethLast month I requested everyone show up for the monthly meeting, since our participation makes for a stronger local chapter. I would like to thank all those who attended. We had forty six members and guests attend a very interesting presentation on “Accomplishing Major Mechanical Retrofits utilizing Performance Contracting”. I do apologize that the hotel did not initially have enough seating to accommodate everyone. I’ve been assured they will set more spare seats in the future to accommodate all.

As the ASHRAE year begins its final quarter, we see many events on the calendar. First is our April 14th meeting on the New Florida Energy Efficiency Code. Then two days later the Gold Coast Chapter is proud to sponsor along with the School Board of Broward County an ASHRAE Satellite Broadcast on Homeland Security. (click here for further details). In addition we have our annual Spring Golf Tournament and Summer Fishing War. Another lunchtime presentation is planned for May at a thermal storage plant in which our members and area high school students will be invited to attend.

There is something planned for everyone so plan to attend as many events as possible; it will be well worth your time.

Sincerely,

Joe Fellmeth

The GoldCoast Chapter of ASHRAE &
The School Board of Broward County present:

Wednesday, April 14, 2004
Noon – 3 p.m. EST

LOCATION: SBBC’s BECON Broadcasting Facility
Large Conference Room
6600 SW Nova Drive
Davie, FL 33317

Terrorist attacks targeting the built environment are a critical and compelling issue to the nation, especially to building designers, owners and managers and first responders. Multiple hazards and threats intersect within a building, and critical questions concerning the danger of chemical, biological or radiological (CBR) attacks remain.

This broadcast will address questions of design, construction and operation of buildings. The primary goal is to address the key issues related to building protection from CBR incidents and draws heavily from ASHRAE’s
most credible and timely reports and publications.

This free broadcast from the studio of WETA public television in Washington, D.C., is intended to reach a cross-section of professionals, including engineers, architects, building owners and managers, fire, police, medical responders, public safety officers, risk managers and other key personnel. DVDs will be produced and made available for sale and for use by ASHRAE chapters.

Information on downlink sites is available on ASHRAE.org.

Gold Coast Chapter Resource & Promotion Update

This month’s meeting theme is Resource Promotion Night for the Gold Coast Chapter. I will update all the attendees of ASHRAE society’s current on-going Research efforts and the contribution’s campaign status during the April meeting. As always we thank all the many donors that help make the Gold Coast chapter’s Resource Promotion fund raising campaign successful.

We have two remaining scheduled events for this year’s Resource Promotion fund raising campaign. The 2nd annual “THE WAR” fishing tournament and the co-sponsored FES-ASHRAE seminar on “Designing to Control Moisture and Mold in Florida’s Humid Climate”.

The “WAR” fishing tournament is scheduled for June 5th, 2004. The tournament will be held at Sands Harbor Hotel & Marina, in Pompano Beach located on the intracoastal.

The “WAR” is about fishing, fun and a unique format of competition. The “WAR” has the typical fishing fleet competition and also includes a unique friendly competition amongst professional peers. There are three categories for the competition amongst; A) Engineers, B) Contractors and C) Vendors (Manufacture Representatives, Sales Engineers/Salespersons in General). See the attached flyer for more information.

We need you to register fishing teams, whether you are a fisherman or not. Al you need is a boat and a few people to compete and have a great time while support a worthy ASHRAE cause. We also need corporate sponsors and volunteers to assist in the planning and running the tournament for our chapter. This event is paramount to our chapter’s successfully reaching our Resource & Promotion goals.

The upcoming co-sponsored FES training on “Designing to Control Moisture and Mold in Florida’s Humid Climate” will be held on June 4th, 2004 in Coral Gables at the Hyatt Regency. The seminar will provide 4 –PDH for registered Florida PE licenses. See the attached seminar flyer, and when you sign-up [please list the ASHRAE Gold Coast Chapter affiliation. If you fail to write-in the ASHRAE Gold Coast chapter affiliation, we will not receive the fund raising contribution FES will send our chapter.

You may get a hold of me via telephone at my office (954) 625-1015, cell (954) 325-9675 or e-mail me at dan.rogers@york.com.
